We play an important role in the Australian economy by leading, maintaining and regulating Australia’s measurement system. We deliver world-class measurement products, advice and client services and administer the regulatory framework for measurement. Our national measurement standards are recognised internationally and we work to enhance and maintain these standards.The Analytical Services Branch consists of a team of over 100 staff based in North Ryde and Port Melbourne. We are responsible for conducting chemical and biological measurement on a wide range of samples (including water, soil, food and pharmaceuticals). Performing a diverse range of tests (including elements, nutrients, organic contaminants and microbiological parameters). We provide analytical solutions and technical expertise for a large set of private sector and government clients across the environmental, food and health sectors, enabling them to meet their business, research and regulatory compliance needs. We also work closely with the tertiary education sector in Australia and have a number of international stakeholders.The opportunityThe main responsibility for this position is the analysis of food residues, food analytes and other nutritional compounds in food related matrices. The position is laboratory based and located at out Port Melbourne site.The position reports to the team Supervisor in the Food and Health Chemistry Laboratory and provides both technical and operational support to the Supervisor.What’s in it for you?We value the different skills, knowledge and perspectives our employees bring. - Tertiary qualifications in a scientific field (chemistry or equivalent) with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience.
- Demonstrated ability to independently undertake testing of food residues, food analytes and other nutritional compounds in food related matrices and showing initiative and judgement.
- The applicant must be highly organised with a focus on providing high quality data that meets clients’ needs.
- The applicant must have experience in analysing samples for food residues, food analytes and other nutritional compounds in food related matrices using GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC LCMS-MS equipment.
- Have a good knowledge of QA/QC requirements for testing samples for food residues, food analytes and other nutritional compounds in food and a sound knowledge of operating within a NATA accredited laboratory.
- Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Work collaboratively within a team environment while demonstrating initiative and drive to meet the goals of the team and the section.
- Demonstrated ability to consistently exhibit the NMI values of being adaptable, accountable, innovate, inclusive, influential and strategic.
The analyst must have good knowledge of Gas Chromatography (GC), High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Liquid Chromatograph with Triple Quad Mass Spectrometry detection (LCMSMS) equipment. The analyst must also have significant experience within a NATA accredited laboratory demonstrating proficiency in the operation of instrument software and experience with trouble shooting and maintaining analytical instruments.Our department has a commitment to inclusion and diversity, with an ambition of being the best possible place to work. - Undertake extraction and analysis of Food Residues, food analytes and other nutritional compounds in food related matrices in accordance to documented methods and quality control protocols.
- Operate and maintain under general supervision laboratory instrumentation such as GC-FID, GC-MS, HPLC, and WATERS (UPLC-TQXS and TQS-Xevo). This includes initialising the instrument and preparing sample sequences, acquisition and limited processing of methods using software such as Targetlynx and Masslynx.
- Process data from instruments, check QA/QC data while using professional judgement to assess whether data meets QA/QC acceptance criteria.
- Checking and reporting of results within LIMS (Sample Manager for Windows) and in accordance to NATA requirements
- Calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment in accordance to NATA requirements and as specified in NMI’s quality procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritise work to achieve target turnaround times.
- Assist senior staff with the validation of new extraction methods and or new analytes to expand and increase the testing capability to meet client requirements and expectations.
- Experience with training, guiding and mentoring junior staff in the analysis, data processing, operation and maintenance analytical instrumentation.
EligibilityApplicants are required to have tertiary qualifications in a scientific field (chemistry or equivalent).A minimum of 2 years relevant experience is preferred.To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.NotesThe department does currently offer flexible work opportunities for many roles.
