Job description: COMMUNICATIONS & SOCIAL MEDIA INTERNSHIP$15.00-20.00/hour(Temporary Part-time Intern Assignment)The Oakland Housing Authority (“OHA”) was founded in 1938 and currently provides subsidized housing to over 15,000 families. As the largest landlord in Oakland, OHA serves a diverse community in neighborhoods throughout the city. Our dedicated staff remains steadfast in its effort to gauge existing needs and provide meaningful opportunities for our families, in addition to expanding the availability of quality housing.The Communications & Social Media Internship is an opportunity to work within one of the nation’s renowned housing authorities and help manage OHA’s internal presence as well as its public image. OHA is highly regarded as a leader in housing policy, affordable housing development, and innovation. A Communications & Social Media Intern will assist the Senior Communications Manager in the promotion of OHA’s accomplishments in the housing industry and as a community leader.The Communications and Social Media Internship will enable a current student to apply his/her public relations, marketing, and media skillset and gain professional experience by supporting OHA’s efforts to broaden its public presence using various multi-media tools. Through this internship, the Communications Intern will help lead the expansion of OHA’s digital footprint into a cross-section of media platforms.Under the direction of the Senior Communications Manager or designated staff, the intern will focus on the OHA’s public relations, marketing, and media.BENEFITS OF THE COMMUNICATIONS & SOCIAL MEDIA INTERNSHIP

  • Opportunity to work with local, state, and national media outlets on articulating the OHA’s position on current issues, developing comprehensive communications campaigns for internal and external audiences and expanding OHA’s presence within a web-based environment.

  • Develop tools to track and measure the effectiveness of various communications strategies.


  • Write and prepare written material for distribution using a variety of media which includes; newsletters, press releases, marketing collateral, award submissions, promotional material and more.
  • Maintain records and calendars for internal and external events, sponsorships and Executive Office activities.
  • Coordinate, review, draft, deploy, reply, monitor and make recommendations for social media content including, but not limited to; OHA’s website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  • Assist with video production; create short video and graphics interchange format (.gif) files for use in social media.
  • Coordinate media outreach opportunities; maintain media databases.
  • Assist with the coordination of the OHA’s employee retreat and other special events.
  • Assist with managing traffic for print collateral production.
  • Maintain the competitive bidding process and draft request for proposals (RFPs) for the procurement of vendors.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONSMay be required to accompany and/or assist the Senior Communications Manager with events outside of the OHA’s offices. Performs related duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEnrollment in 3rd or 4th year of undergraduate studies or post-bachelors program in communications, journalism, public affairs or related field is required. Excellent written and oral communications skills. Solid understanding of principles of journalism; writing for various platforms and AP Style Guide a must. Knowledge of graphic design, print production and collateral fulfillment required.Strong interest in affordable housing and related issues desired.Possession of a California driver’s license with an insurable driving record.Equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.KNOWLEDGE OF: Modern office practices, basic computer functions including: Microsoft Office Suite, internet navigation, general office equipment, electronic correspondence and telephone systems; video production equipment and basic photography. Basic role of media, pitching stories, news clipping and social media integration.ABILITY TO: Manage multiple projects at once; work independently and strategically; exercise patience and professionalism; develop and implement print, broadcast and social media strategies; interpret complex regulatory and industry content and relay using lay terms for broad and diverse internal and external audiences.PROGRAM REQUIREMENTSWhen applying for the Communications & Social Media Intern position, you must submit the following:

The work days will be flexible Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm for nine (9) to twelve (12) weeks. There are two (2) positions with working hours that are twenty (20) to twenty nine ½ (29.5) hours per week.
