- Study will produce doctoral level scholarship in relation to the ARC project – Indigenising the Built Environment in Australia
- Base Salary commencing from $109,301 – $116,679 pro-rata + 17% superannuation

It is a core part of our purpose as a university.The role will join a small but growing research team led by Chief Investigator Dr Michael Mossman and Professor Donald McNeill. The successful applicant will study a PHD with a topic of Indigenous-focused scholarship that relates work on a project jointly funded through Australian Research Council Discovery Indigenous and the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning. The overall aim of this project is to investigate and report on the efficacy of the Architect’s Accreditation Council of Australia National Standard of Competency for Architecture (NSCA) performance criteria relating to Country and First Nations Communities and Cultural Practices. The culturally informed project aims to survey and workshop these Performance Criteria of the NSCA with New South Wales based Indigenous communities, universities, practices, peak bodies and allied disciplines. The successful applicant would provide contributions to the research project that would utilise data collected from the surveys and workshops.Experience in architecture and the built environment in relation to Country and First Nations Communities and Culture is critical to advancing the processes and outcomes of this research project. It is critical to understand that potential scholarship from this doctoral study is negotiable to ensure a fit for purpose exercise that suits the successful candidate and the research project.Responsibilities that can be negotiated and will vary over the length of the candidature include doctoral level research contributions that:
- Connects Indigenous methodologies with the Country and First Nations and Cultural Practices NSCA Performance Criteria.
- Enacts independent study and collective team research around topics relating to Indigenous culture, architectural education pedagogical practices and curriculum, and industry policies and procedures in relation to architecture and the built environment.
- Utilises qualitative research to include the collection and analysis of data and writing up of results.
- Undertakes qualitative research field work with the team, including a specific 2 month intensive period of workshops per year over 3 years in Sydney and surrounding regional areas.
- Builds and maintains strategic relationships with internal and external stakeholders to identify key issues as they relate to the research activities and help developing effective solutions to challenges that arise.
- Coordinates the synthesis of collected data and assess themes and key points into study.
About you
- Identify as Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander
- hold a Master of Architecture (preferred) or a postgraduate masters degree in the built environment or work experience that holds commensurate value
- demonstrate experience of applying research investigations in academic environments or in practice-based roles with a comparable levels of responsibility
- welcome opportunities to develop and contribute to research team by producing original, high quality and independent research
- demonstrate capabilities in written output in research or industry media platforms
- demonstrate ability to perform and/or learn and apply qualitative data analyses tasks
- ability to communicate effectively across a range of forums with capacity to learn and apply new applications critical to the research project
- experiences or welcomes opportunities to develop capabilities in traditional and non-traditional research output manuscripts or report writing
- demonstrates accuracy, attention to detail and is highly organised, with the ability to work according to strict timelines and manage research project demands
- possesses strong problem-solving skills and the ability to use initiative and exercise sound judgement and ability to prioritise workload during busy periods
- ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work.
