Non Daily News Photographer/Visuals Journalist

Hometown Life/ hometownlife.com , part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks a visuals journalist to help tell impactful stories in metro Detroit.

The ideal candidate will have a talent and passion for visual digital storytelling that leads to increased digital audience growth.

Hometown Life is a digital-focused news organization that puts an important emphasis on publishing dynamic content online first, then in our 10 print newspapers.

We’re looking for someone who is experienced and comfortable with daily news assignments, sports and portraits, but who also is eager to work on longer-term projects. Experience producing strong news and feature video is also strongly desired.

We are committed to meaningful enterprise, watchdog and investigative journalism that serves our community and engages existing and new subscribers, and we understand that visuals are a crucial part of this process.

Whether it’s working with reporters on an in-depth project or on a standalone photo story, we encourage our visual journalists to be proactive in realizing their vision.

Multimedia journalists are expected to be capable of writing as circumstances dictate. The right candidate should have a great understanding of all platforms of storytelling that we use daily: desktop, tablet, mobile, social media and print, with a look toward the future and new ways of presenting visual stories to help increase engagement across all platforms.

Hometown Life and the Observer & Eccentric Newspapers publish daily online at hometownlife.com and produce 10 print editions: five weekly and five twice weekly. Coverage area includes the communities of Livonia, Canton, Plymouth, Northville, Westland, Farmington, Birmingham, Novi, South Lyon and Milford.

You will be working in thriving large and small communities in an area full of recreation for running, boating, cycling and more. Our home office in Novi is centrally located about 30 minutes from downtown Detroit and downtown Ann Arbor.

This job is based in Novi, Michigan.

Responsibilities:

  • Shoot still photographs and short videos, create photo galleries, write captions and occasional short stories.
  • Work with other USA TODAY NETWORK properties and employees with similar jobs and responsibilities to share content/ideas/workflow and best practices.
  • Report clearly and accurately and providing context for our readers.
  • Cultivate visual packages by developing relationships with local communities, especially the underserved. Has a genuine interest in people and ability to build trust.
  • Deliver stories,photos,videos and galleries via stories, video, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or any other methods available to reach our audience.
  • Work with other journalists to collaborate on stories and visuals.
  • Work with editors to evaluate what’s working and fix what’s not, using metrics to inform story and visual choices, content delivery, and shape coverage strategies.
  • Promote personal brand, the brands of colleagues and the institutional brand.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, photography or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience at a professional news organization preferred.
  • Social media knowledge is key, knowing how/when to use it to promote/tell stories visually.
  • Must be proficient in visual software including Premiere Pro, Photoshop and Photo Mechanic.
  • Should be able to tell stories with visuals as well as words when needed, with basic reporting skills a necessity.
  • Must be willing to work weekends and evenings as well as some holidays.
  • Visual specialists will routinely lift, carry and work with a laptop, video and still equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to withstand long periods of time in inclement weather.
  • This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check, motor vehicle record check & drug screen.
