Job summary
Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world.

Key job responsibilities
As a Senior Optical Communication Systems Engineer on KSET (Kuiper Solutions Engineering team), your responsibilities will include some or all of the following:

  • Interact with customers to understand technical requirements, and translate them into technically robust solutions backed by data and analysis;
  • Perform analyses and trades to assess and define satellite optical system architecture and design;
  • Develop high bandwidth systems for free space optical communication between satellites;
  • Lead optical waveform algorithm development and implementation for an FPGA-based system;
  • Model and simulate system performance, and drive development of custom components where needed, to achieve low-cost, light-weight, and reliable systems that meet the performance requirements;
  • Deliver well-written documentation, reports, and presentations for technical design reviews and as part of proposal efforts
  • Design and support test campaigns, both development and qualification/acceptance, for space hardware and software systems

The role is located in Northridge, CA, and includes US relocation benefits.

This position requires the candidate to have US Citizenship

Security Clearance: Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a US Government security clearance of TS/SCI, so you must be a U.S. citizen for consideration.

About the team
The Kuiper Solutions Engineering team is a multi-disciplinary technology team involved in developing and delivering targeted and scalable solutions for custom satellite and ground applications, including for United States and allied government customers.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Physics, Electronics, Communication Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of experience with advanced signal processing algorithm design, simulation and implementation for high-speed optical communications
  • 5+ years of experience in end-to-end channel modeling in Matlab, Python, or similar tool
  • 3+ years of experience in DSP and FEC hardware block specifications appropriate for FPGA or RTL implementation

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in control and optimization algorithms for electro-optical integration
  • Experience in high-speed DSP, especially FFE/DFE/MLSE equalizers, clock data recovery, error correction codes, and tracking algorithms
  • Experience in high speed ADC, calibration algorithms and coherent DSP architectures
  • Experience in high speed characterization of devices, electrical probe stations, operation of high speed and high frequency test equipment, such as BER test equipment, network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and high-speed oscilloscopes
  • Experience with lasers, detectors, modulators, modems, optical fiber and devices
  • Experience with free space optical communication channel, including pointing, acquisition, and tracking
  • Experience with precision ranging and time synchronization through optical channels
  • Working knowledge of FGPAs/VHDL
  • PhD Degree in Physics, Electronics, or Communication Engineering
  • Ability to provide thought leadership and key input on new initiatives as well as on programs underway
  • Ability to regularly engage with senior stake holders and influence across the organization
  • Familiarity with satellite-related space and ground systems
  • Active security clearance (TS/SCI w/ polygraph preferred)
