Job summary
The EC2 Network Health team is the source of truth at AWS for the network connectivity of EC2. Using our broad mesh of network monitoring agents in every AWS region, we alert our partners in other teams to large-scale customer impacts. Our product provides the data EC2 network engineers need to quickly restore service.

Imagine the scale we need to collect, process, and distribute our data. We assess and report the connectivity of servers, racks, and routers across all of AWS globally, which accounts for a substantial portion of all Internet servers in the world. We perform this massive feat every minute of every day.

We need you to lead this team in delivering more sophisticated network observability tooling and scaling up this product with the massive growth of cloud computing. How could you give AWS engineers and operators richer and more actionable telemetry to keep the world’s largest cloud provider running smoothly?

As a senior engineer on the Network Health team, you will…

  • Architect, implement and deploy distributed systems that work at the scale of the EC2 fleet.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to help make this team one in which everyone can do their best work.
  • Anticipate risks and lead your team in managing them.
  • Partner with the team’s engineering and product managers to define the vision, strategy, and roadmap for the team.
  • Deliver software to give our customers visibility into the health of their servers.
  • Collaborate with teams at AWS to feed network health data into other products, such as auto-remediation, premium support tooling, etc.
  • Share in an on-call rotation with your team to assist with incident response when there is a major customer disruption.

  • 4+ years of professional software development experience
  • 3+ years of programming experience with at least one software programming language
  • 2+ years of experience contributing to the system design or architecture (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems
  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead OR leading an engineering team
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field or equivalent experience of 4+ years in a technical role.
  • Knowledge of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, and designing for performance, scalability, and availability in at least one language such as Java, Python, Golang, C#, Ruby, C, C++, C#, or others.


  • Experience architecting complex software systems for scalability, reliability and performance that have been successfully delivered to customers.
  • Experience setting up a software team for success by establishing and maintaining high standards for operational excellence, such as defining and facilitating team practices, coding standards, peer feedback, source control, automated testing, build tooling, deployment, monitoring, and alerting.
  • Ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences.
  • Passion for mentorship. Ability to provide effective coaching to support your teammates’ career development.
  • Experience breaking down customer problems into incremental solutions.
  • Ability to partner with other leaders to continuously refine the team’s balance between reducing technical debt, maintenance, and new investments.
  • Deep knowledge of monitoring and alerting on large-scale, cloud-based distributed systems.
