Job summary
Interested in predicting a Confidence Score for a customer to use our digital offering, or building a strongly consistent cached data store which scales for several hundred thousand transactions per second for discovering digital rewards of our customers, or building solutions to infer the propensity for our customer to buy a book because they watched a movie, or building cross-digital personalization strategies based on item-to-item collaborative filtering, or working closely and feeling inspired from other Sr. SDEs and Principal Engineers in Machine Learning and foundational technologies at Amazon – meet the rapidly growing Digital Discovery team. We are building cross-digital ML powered personalized recommendation of digital products and promotions for our customers. Our solutions need to meet the strict latency, scale and availability requirements on the high trafficked Amazon.com homepage. Our solutions are entirely built in native AWS. We are building digital discovery solutions which will fundamentally change how digital businesses think about digital marketing and discovery (making it hands-of-the-wheel).

We have millions of our customers engaging with the Digital content and making decisions like – what to buy/listen/watch/read next. Digital Discovery team at Amazon is building platform and services to help our customers find the next Digital product they would like to engage, with highest value by offering the best deals and promotions. We index on designing for high service operational excellence to minimize the SDE effort in maintaining the services and instead use SDE efforts in innovations to add new features for the ever evolving customer needs and new Digital content.

As a tenured Sr. Software Development Engineer, you will provide technical leadership to the entire team and also contribute to the design and development of multiple new scalable services and data processing workflows. We are solving some very interesting and complex problems in the next couple years, and there is a great deal of opportunity for a creative technical leader to innovate in the space and drive product direction. You will be converting the business problem into a ML problem and service the ML recommendation at internet scale to our customers in the form of a personalized widgets. A successful candidate will have an established background in developing customer-facing experiences and backend web-services, strong technical skills, a motivation to achieve results in a fast paced environment, high creativity, and great analytical reasoning skills.

Key job responsibilities
This role will provide technical leadership to a team of 8 SDEs by doing the design and architecture reviews, raise the bar on software operations, work with Sr. SDEs/PEs in partner and client teams to define tech strategy for the 3 year product strategy, and contribute to implementation/coding tasks of key/critical pieces in the design.

Design reviews, defining/tuning tech strategy, code reviews, operations review, designing/implementing key/critical pieces in the design, mentoring SDEs.

We index on designing for a high operational excellence to minimize the SDE effort in maintaining the services and instead use SDE efforts in innovations to add new features for the ever evolving customer needs and new Digital content. We use ML algorithms to understand digital propensity of the customer and build high scale, low latency engineering apis to render ML based recommendations.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• 2+ years of experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems
• 3+ years of programming experience with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design
• 4+ years of professional software development experience
• 2+ years of experience as a mentor, tech lead OR leading an engineering team

3+ years of programming experience with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design
2+ years of experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and current systems
4+ years of professional software development experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Computer Science
• A history of working in startups and fast-paced environments
• Experience building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers at scale
• Knowledge of software engineering practices & patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and live site operations
• Mentoring SDEs in the team and outside
